TL;DR
AI answer visibility means an AI assistant names your product, describes it accurately and cites sources you trust, for the questions hotel buyers actually ask.
G2 found 51% of B2B software buyers now start research with an AI chatbot more often than with Google.
Score ten questions across presence, accuracy and sources: 0 to 7 is Invisible, 8 to 14 is Present but misread, 15 to 20 is Visible and cited.
Most of what AI cites sits off your website, on review sites, LinkedIn, Reddit and YouTube.
Give one person a fixed monthly prompt list so visibility becomes a tracked leading indicator.
A hotelier who wants a new channel manager no longer has to open ten tabs. They can type "best channel manager for a 40-room independent hotel in Portugal" into ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google's AI Mode and get a short list with reasons. If your product is not on that list, you lost the deal before your website had a chance.
This post is a self-assessment for founders and revenue leaders at hotel tech companies. Answer ten questions, score yourself honestly, and you will know whether AI answers are sending buyers to you, past you, or to a competitor.
Why this is worth twenty minutes
G2 research published in April 2026 found that 51% of B2B software buyers now start their research with an AI chatbot more often than with Google, up from 29% eleven months earlier. In the same survey, 45% named citations from software review sites as the most confidence-inspiring signal in a chatbot's answer. Bain published a survey in October 2026 of IT decision makers showing that about half of B2B software buyers use generative AI most of the time to research, compare and shortlist vendors. Bain's headline warning is blunt: if you are not on AI's initial list, your sales funnel might shrink.
Search clicks are also thinning. Pew Research Center found that Google users who saw an AI summary clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits, against 15% when no summary appeared, and clicked a link inside the summary in just 1% of visits. Ahrefs re-ran its study with December 2025 data and found an AI Overview now correlates with a 58% lower average click-through rate for the top-ranking page. These are cross-industry figures, not hotel-only, but hoteliers use the same tools as everyone else. Our post on how hotel software buying changed from 2019 to 2026 traces the same shift.
A useful definition: AI answer visibility is the share of buyer questions in your category where an AI assistant names your product, describes it accurately, and cites a source you would be happy for a buyer to read. All three parts matter. Being named with the wrong price or the wrong segment can hurt more than not being named.
The self-assessment: ten questions, twenty points
Score each question 0, 1 or 2. Be strict. If you are unsure, score it 0, because uncertainty usually means nobody owns it.
Section A: Are you in the answer? (questions 1 to 3)
When you ask two AI assistants for the best tools in your category for your core segment, are you named? 0 = not named in either; 1 = named in one; 2 = named in both, in the first half of the list.
Are you named for the problem, not only the category? Ask a pain question such as "how do I stop overbookings across OTAs". 0 = never; 1 = sometimes; 2 = consistently.
Are you named in the languages and markets you sell to? Repeat the test in Spanish, German or whichever market matters. 0 = only in English; 1 = in some markets; 2 = in every market you actively sell to.
Section B: Is the answer accurate? (questions 4 to 6)
Does the AI describe your target customer correctly? 0 = wrong segment (for example, it calls you an enterprise tool when you sell to independents); 1 = vague; 2 = correct and specific.
Does it get your pricing model and integrations right? 0 = wrong or invented; 1 = partly right; 2 = right, because your public pages state it clearly.
Does it name a weakness you fixed years ago? 0 = yes, an old complaint is repeated as current; 1 = mentioned with nuance; 2 = no outdated weaknesses appear.
Section C: Do the sources work for you? (questions 7 to 10)
Which sources does the answer cite? 0 = mostly competitors' pages or comparison sites you have never seen; 1 = a mix; 2 = your own pages, review profiles and credible third parties.
Are your review profiles recent? 0 = most reviews older than 18 months; 1 = some recent; 2 = a steady flow every month.
Do you appear on the third-party platforms AI tools lean on? 0 = no presence; 1 = a company page only; 2 = active founder and customer discussion.
Does someone check this monthly? 0 = never checked; 1 = checked once; 2 = a named owner runs the same prompts every month and logs the result.
Question 9 deserves a note. A Search Engine Land report on a Peec AI analysis of 30 million sources found Reddit was the most-cited source across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and AI Overviews, with YouTube, LinkedIn, Wikipedia and Forbes also in the top five. For B2B queries, Perplexity emphasised Reddit, LinkedIn and G2. Your own website is only one of the inputs.
Score bands: what your total means
Score | Band | What it usually means | First move |
|---|---|---|---|
0 to 7 | Invisible | Buyers who start in AI rarely meet you; your pipeline depends on referrals and outbound | Fix accuracy on your own site, then start a review flow |
8 to 14 | Present but misread | You are named, but with old facts, the wrong segment or weak sources | Rewrite the pages AI quotes and refresh review profiles |
15 to 20 | Visible and cited | AI answers send qualified buyers who already understand your fit | Protect it with monthly checks and expand to new markets and questions |
How to move up one band
From Invisible to Present. Start with what you control. Make sure your site states, in plain sentences, who the product is for, which property types and sizes it serves, which PMS and channel integrations are live, and how pricing works. A clear pricing page and an honest comparison page are two of the pages AI tools most often quote for buying questions. Then build a monthly review request into onboarding, as described in how to ask hotel customers for reviews.
From Present to Cited. Correct the record where the AI gets it wrong. If an answer repeats an outdated weakness, publish a dated page that explains what changed and when. Earn recent reviews on the platforms buyers trust; our guide to getting reviews and rankings on Hotel Tech Report covers the mechanics. Get the founder and product team into the conversations AI tools read: LinkedIn posts with real substance, answers in relevant communities, conference talks that end up on YouTube.
Staying Cited. Assign an owner. Keep a fixed list of 15 to 20 prompts (category, problem, comparison and market-specific questions) and run them on the same day each month. Log whether you are named, whether the facts are right, and which sources are cited. This becomes a leading indicator alongside the ones in our pipeline leading indicators guide.
Common traps
Testing only your brand name. Asking "what is [your product]" tells you nothing about discovery. Buyers ask category and problem questions.
Treating it as an SEO project. Rankings still matter, but much of what AI cites sits off your site: reviews, discussion threads, partner listings.
Chasing every assistant at once. Pick the two your buyers actually use and get those right first.
Ignoring wrong answers. Being named with the wrong price or segment pre-qualifies the wrong buyers and disqualifies the right ones.
AI answer visibility is not a separate channel. It sits in the reach and convert stages of the system set out in our hotel tech GTM strategy guide, and it depends on the same positioning, proof and review work. Google is also moving towards booking actions inside its AI surfaces, covered in what Google AI Mode means for hotel tech vendors.
If you scored under 15 and are not sure which gap is costing you the most pipeline, the free GTM leak audit will show where buyers drop you before they ever book a demo.
