TL;DR
Expedia Group launched more than 30 features on 28 October 2026, including AI tools that answer questions about a hotel and compare hotels side by side.
Property Expert answers are grounded in property information and guest reviews, so a hotel's data quality now shapes what travellers are told.
Channel, content, reputation, booking engine and PMS vendors each gain a new sales argument, but must prove it with a live test.
The new tools are listed as U.S. features, and Expedia has not published impact data, so do not overstate reach or results.
On 28 October 2026 Expedia Group released more than 30 new and enhanced features across Expedia, Hotels.com and Vrbo. Most of the coverage went to the traveller side: natural language search, an activity planner, group tools. For hotel tech vendors the more important change is quieter. Two of the new tools answer a traveller's questions about a specific hotel, and compare one hotel against another, using whatever the OTA already knows about the property.
This explainer covers what Expedia launched, why AI answers about a property change what hotels need from their software, and how vendors in different categories can use the shift in how they sell and position. It is written for founders and revenue leaders at hotel tech companies, not for hoteliers.
What Expedia launched
According to the Expedia Group release of 28 October, the update spans Expedia, Hotels.com and Vrbo and is meant to help travellers "make more informed decisions, create flexibility and value, and personalize experiences across the whole trip." Travel Weekly reported that the company showed the features at a Fall Product Release event in New York, alongside Layla, the AI trip planning company it acquired earlier this year. The hotel-relevant pieces are below.
Feature | Where | What it does |
|---|---|---|
Property Expert | Expedia and Hotels.com (U.S., web and app) | Answers specific questions about a property, grounded in property information and guest reviews |
AI Compare | Hotels.com (U.S., app and web) | Compares shortlisted hotels side by side on location, amenities, value and flexibility, with follow-up questions |
Natural language search | Hotels.com and Vrbo (U.S. English) | Lets travellers describe the stay they want in their own words instead of using fixed filters |
Loved by Guests | Hotels.com | Surfaces top-rated hotels that consistently earn strong guest reviews |
Reserve now, pay later | Hotels.com, and Vrbo with $0 due at booking | Lets travellers hold a booking and pay later; on Hotels.com eligible rewards and discounts now apply |
Expedia's chief product officer, Shilpa Ranganathan, framed the comparison tool this way in the Travel Weekly report: "Travelers rarely ask which hotel is best for me. They want to decide that, but they want AI to do the homework." The Fall 2026 release page describes Property Expert as a way to "ask questions about a stay's rooms, policies, location, and more" and get instant answers.
Why this matters: the answer is built from your customer's data
Before tools like these, a hotel's OTA listing was a page a traveller scanned. Missing details cost a little conversion. Now the listing is source material for an AI that answers direct questions and ranks one hotel against another. If the room attributes are thin, the policy text is vague or recent reviews mention a problem nobody fixed, the AI answer reflects that, and the traveller may never see the hotel's own explanation.
Big chains already see it this way. On Marriott's third quarter call on 2 November, CEO Anthony Capuano said AI's impact is mainly felt in discovery so far, and CX Dive reported that Marriott is focused on populating third-party platforms with accurate and rich content. When a company with roughly 309 million Bonvoy members names content accuracy on outside platforms as a priority, the smaller hotels your product serves face the same problem with far fewer people to solve it.
This is the OTA version of a trend we covered in how Google AI Mode handles hotel booking and in how to get your product into AI answers. The pattern is the same: an AI layer sits between the traveller and the hotel, and the quality of structured data decides how the hotel comes across.
How it changes the pitch, by vendor category
Not every vendor gains equally. The table below sets out where the shift creates a sales argument and what a vendor should be able to prove before using it.
Vendor category | New argument | What you need to prove |
|---|---|---|
Channel manager and content tools | Complete, consistent room and policy data across channels now feeds AI answers | Which attributes you push, to which OTAs, and how often they sync |
Reputation and review management | Review themes now shape AI answers and comparisons, not only star ratings | How fast a hotel spots and fixes a recurring complaint |
Booking engine and direct channel | The direct site must answer the same questions as well as the OTA does | That your engine shows policies, room details and total price clearly |
Guest messaging and AI concierge | Pre-stay questions the OTA answers are questions your tool could answer on the direct channel | Answer accuracy and handover to staff |
PMS | Accurate room types and attributes start in the system of record | Clean mapping between PMS room types and distribution |
1. Sell data quality as revenue, not housekeeping
Content work has always been hard to sell because hoteliers see it as admin. AI answers turn it into something a general manager can test in two minutes: open the listing, ask Property Expert a question about parking or pets, and read what comes back. A vendor who can run that test in a demo has a concrete opening that does not depend on feature claims.
2. Reframe the direct booking argument
Booking engine vendors usually lead with commission savings, as in why OTA commission pressure is your best sales argument. That still holds, but the bar has moved. If an OTA can answer "is breakfast included and how far is the beach" instantly, a direct site that buries those answers in a PDF loses on experience, not just price. Position the direct channel as the place where the hotel controls the answer.
3. Treat reviews as input data
Property Expert is grounded in guest reviews as well as property information, and Loved by Guests surfaces hotels that consistently earn strong reviews. For reputation vendors, the message shifts from "protect your score" to "the themes in your reviews are what the AI repeats." Be careful here: Expedia has not published how much weight reviews carry in answers, so do not claim a ranking effect you cannot show.
4. Watch payment flexibility
Skift reported that Vrbo's reserve now, pay later option adopts a model Airbnb launched for U.S. domestic stays in August 2025. Payment and booking engine vendors should expect hoteliers to ask whether the direct channel can offer a similar hold. If yours can, it belongs in the pitch. If it cannot, decide now whether it is on the roadmap.
What not to do
Do not overstate the reach. The release lists Property Expert and AI Compare as U.S. features. A European independent will not see them yet.
Do not invent impact figures. Expedia has not published conversion data for these tools. Sell the test, not a number.
Do not frame the OTA as the enemy. Most of your customers depend on Expedia for demand. Position your product as the way to look right there and on the direct channel.
Do not rebuild your positioning around one launch. Add it as proof of a broader shift to AI answers, which Google and the chains are also driving.
A simple next step
Pick three customers in the U.S. and ask Property Expert the five questions guests ask most often about each hotel. Note where the answer is wrong or missing and which system holds the correct data. That gives you a short, honest proof point for sales calls and a list of product gaps. It also fits the positioning layer of a full hotel tech go-to-market strategy, where outside shifts like this should be turned into a sharper reason to buy.
